Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS is Polycystic Ovarian syndrome and it is common heath problem because of the imbalance in reproductive hormone. It affects 10 – 15 % women with age of childbearing potential. It is affect the fertility of the women up to more extent.

Generally, these are develop due to below reasons:

  1. Family History

Female relatives like daughters or sister of women with PCOS have 50 % chance to have PCOS.

  1. High levels of androgens

Androgens are sometime called as ‘Male hormones’ even though women can produce some extent of androgens. More amounts of androgens in women can develop PCOS. Women having PCOS, more androgens level than normal level. Women who have more level of androgen is more prone to get baldness and excessive hair on body.

  1. Insulin resistance / High level of insulin

Normally, insulin is hormone to controls glucose level in the blood.

More than 70 % women with PCOS have insulin resistance that means their body doesn’t use the available insulin effectively so glucose level can’t be maintain stable level but increase the level of insulin and this higher level of insulin is produce more androgens.

PCOS symptoms are include:

  • Irregular menstrual cycle: It means women have Irregular period. Normally, menstrual cycle is 28 days but in case of PCOS it can be more than 35 days or Eight or less cycles per year.
  • Hirsutism: Excessive hair on the face or any part of the body known as Hirsutism and more than 70 % women affects by it if they have PCOS.
  • Alopecia / Baldness: Due to PCOS, hair loss or thinning of the scalp hair in ‘Male Pattern’ baldness.
  • Acne: Women with PCOS have more androgens and it leads to increase acne.
  • Obesity: More than 70 % women with PCOS are obese or overweight.

PCOS treatment are generally two types:

Life style modification: some of the symptoms of PCOS can be treated by life style modification like Weight Gain.

Medicines: To regulate some androgens or insulin related symptoms like Hirsutism or Irregular periods can be treated by medicine. Medicines like Metformin, Anti-androgens medicines, Progestin therapy are help to reduce symptoms of PCOS.
