Diabetes management: Herbal remedies

Generally, diabetes means elevated sugar into the blood.

Mainly two type of diabetes, first is when our body stops producing insulin- Type 1 diabetes (Juvenile Diabetes) and second is when body does not respond to insulin that is produced by the body-(Type 2 diabetes).

India is said to be the diabetes capital of the world. With nearly 50 million people in India suffering from diabetes, the country has a big challenge to face and we live where prescription medicine is getting more expensive as well as questioned.

Alternative medicine is gaining momentum and with good reason. Let us know some natural sources like herbs which can helpful for diabetes management:

  1. Madhunashini/ Gymnema sylvestre

Gymnema sylvestre is known as ‘Madhunashini’ or ‘Gurmar’. It is means ‘Sugar killer’. The herb supports the normal function of the specialized beta cells of the pancreas which secrete insulin and normalize blood sugar levels.

Recent studied show that it contains Gymnemic acid which is responsible for anti-diabetic action by acting on absorption of sugar from intestine.

  1. Methi / Fenugreek

Fenugreek’s dried seed known as ‘Methi’. It is bitter in taste and it helps to reduce sugar level by slowing down digestion and absorption of carbohydrates this proposes it may be effective for treatment of diabetes. It’s mechanism of action same as alpha-glucosidase inhibitor drug like ‘Acarbose’.

  1. Bitter Gourd

Bitter Gourd is commonly known as ‘Karela’. Recent medical studies have indicated that the vegetable possesses a ‘plant-insulin’ which helps in lowering blood sugar by bringing glucose into the cells for energy. The consumption of bitter gourd can help your cells utilize glucose and move it to your liver, muscles, and fat.

  1. Cinnamon

Cinnamon, often used in cooking and baking, is increasingly being linked to improvements in the treatment of conditions such as diabetes mellitus.

Research has suggested that cinnamon can help to improve blood glucose levels and increase insulin sensitivity or reduce insulin resistance.

  1. Tindora / Coccinia Indica

Coccinia Indica, the ayurvedic healing plant for the lowering of blood sugar with vitamin D. It works similar as insulin. Some plant element corrects the activity of enzyme ‘Glucose-6-phosphate’ and ‘Lactate Hydrogenase’ during glycolysis and due to which it’s reduce blood sugar level.

  1. Amla / Indian Gooseberry

Amla or Indian gooseberry is one of the most powerful herbs used in Ayurveda. It is traditional remedy to control high blood sugar level.

It also contains some minerals which is useful to regulate glucose or carbohydrate metabolism and helps to creating your body more responsive to insulin.
